Add an AI chat agent to your Joomla site

What you need

Add Hazelchat to Joomla in six steps

1. In Hazelchat

   Prepare your agent

   Add your content, check the details and try your agent. Under Website → Install on your website, add your website's domain.

2. In Hazelchat

   Copy the installation code

   Copy the installation code. It holds your public widget key, which is not a password.

3. In Joomla

   Install the extension

   Download the zip. In the Joomla administrator, go to System → Install → Extensions, open Upload Package File and drop the zip there. Installing it alone loads nothing on your site.

4. In Joomla

   Paste the code and enable it

   Go to System → Manage → Plugins, search for Hazelchat and open System - Hazelchat. Paste the code into Installation code, set Status to Enabled and click Save & Close. Only the key is kept.

5. In Joomla

   Remove old snippets, clear the cache

   If you pasted a Hazelchat script into your template or a Custom module before, remove it so the chat loads once. If System - Page Cache is on, clear the cache under System → Maintenance → Clear Cache.

6. On your site

   Switch it on and test it

   Back in Hazelchat, click Publish and switch on (or Switch on if your published agent is unchanged). Hazelchat checks that the script is on your website before the agent goes live. Then open your website, ask a question in the chat, return to Hazelchat and click Yes, I saw this answer.

What the extension does

It adds one script to your public pages and nothing else. Your content, answers, enquiries and billing all stay in your Hazelchat workspace.

The extension is one system plugin. It adds https://app.hazelchat.co/widget.js, with your public key, to the head of your public HTML pages. It stores only that key and one consent setting, has no database tables, and sends nothing from Joomla to Hazelchat. The administrator, feeds, print views and modal windows never load the chat. Its options are in English and German, and it is free software under the GPL, version 2 or later.

Visitor consent

Joomla has no cookie banner of its own. If your consent tool must allow the chat first, turn on Wait for my consent manager in System - Hazelchat. The chat then stays closed and sends no chat requests until your consent tool tells it to start:

Send detail: false when a visitor withdraws consent. The extension does not configure consent tools for you. If your site must block even the script download, let your consent tool block that script too.

Caching and security headers

• Clear the page cache

  After you install, change the code or remove the extension.

• Leave the script alone

  Exclude https://app.hazelchat.co/widget.js from script combining, rewriting or delayed loading. The script must keep its own address and key.

• Content-Security-Policy

  If you turn it on in System - HTTP Headers, allow https://app.hazelchat.co in script-src, connect-src and frame-src. With nonces on, Joomla adds the nonce to the tag itself.

Updates and changes

Joomla checks this update file and offers new versions under System → Update → Extensions. Every version is listed in the changelog.
