Add Hazelchat to your IONOS site
What you need
- A MyWebsite Now site. IONOS says its HTML features are not in every MyWebsite Now plan, without listing which. The older MyWebsite Creator has different menus and is not covered here.
- A Hazelchat account with an agent you have tried in the workspace. You can start free.
Add the code
- In Hazelchat, open the install step (Install in setup, or Website → Install on your website), choose Something else and click Copy the code. It is one line with your own widget key:
<script src="https://app.hazelchat.co/widget.js" data-agent="YOUR-WIDGET-KEY" defer></script> - In your IONOS account, open Menu → Web Projects, click Manage project, then Website → Website Editor.
- Open Settings → Custom Head Code and paste the line. IONOS uses code there on every page.
- Choose a privacy consent option (see Visitor consent below), click Save and publish your site.
- Back in Hazelchat, enter your website’s address and click I’ve added the code.
- Click Publish and switch on (or Switch on if your agent is already published). Hazelchat first looks for the code on your website and only then makes the chat visible.
- Open your website, refresh it, ask the chat a question a visitor would ask, then return to Hazelchat and click Yes, I saw this answer.
These steps follow IONOS’s own help (Using HTML and JavaScript), read on 14 October 2026. We have not yet tested Hazelchat on IONOS ourselves. If a menu looks different, IONOS’s page is the up-to-date one.
Check it works
- Open your published site in a private window. Hazelchat’s line ends with
defer, so the chat starts after the page has loaded, even from the head. - With Consent required, agree in your site’s cookie banner first; until then, IONOS does not run the code.
With No consent required, the line should be in your page’s source, where Hazelchat’s check finds it. With Consent required, IONOS most likely adds it only after a visitor agrees, so the check may not find it. Then prove your website under Website settings in Hazelchat with a DNS record instead, which you add where you manage your IONOS domain.
Common problems
- No Custom Head Code under Settings. Your plan may not include it. IONOS does not list which plans do, so ask IONOS.
- The check cannot find the code although the chat appears. This is the consent option at work. Use the DNS record described above.
- “The install script was not found on the page.” Check that you published the change in IONOS and that the line is complete, with your own key, then try again in Hazelchat.
Visitor consent
MyWebsite Now asks, for each piece of code, whether it needs consent. Consent required runs the code only after a visitor agrees; No consent required runs it straight away. Which one fits a chat on your site is part of your own privacy assessment.
To keep the chat closed until a visitor agrees, add data-require-consent="true" to the line, before defer. The chat then waits until your consent tool sends:
window.dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent('hazelchat-consent', { detail: true }));
Send detail: false when a visitor withdraws consent. With this option and no event, no chat appears, so test it on your published site.
Remove Hazelchat
- Open Settings → Custom Head Code, delete the Hazelchat line, save and publish.
- To hide the chat everywhere at once without touching your site, switch Hazelchat off on its Website page. The line then stays on your pages but shows nothing.
